RISD Foundation Year Works: Weekly Projects

This is a project using only wooden dowels, a spool of white string, and one steel marble. The objective is to station the steel marble 16 inches off the bottom surface while incorporating it into the rest of the piece. I used hot water and carboard templates to bend the wooden dowels.
This project is a similar concept of the previous project, but making a structure so that the steel marble moves in a fixed chain of movements. I inserted wooden dowels on the sides so that the steel marble, when dropped on top of the structure, will move left to right and back and forth as it goes down.
This is a project using solely steel wire to construct an artwork that contains any type of object. I chose to make something that could hold liquid containers--I thought it would be interesting to suggest an irony of a container holding container. The wires on the top side of the structure are shaped so that it works as ripples or reiterations of the top-view shape of each liquid container.
This is another steel wire project, this time depicting gravity. I made long, equal steel strands by linking cut wire pieces (scroll down for detailed shots). The length of the cut wire peices increase from the top of the strand to the bottom to represent the acceleration of speed when something is dropped due to gravity. The strands are almost touching the ground but just short enough to swing whenever someone taps them. I installed this piece in a random location within our classroom to represent the omnipresence of gravity.
This is a project using solely wood, string, glue, and small metal parts (but not for screwing) to create a mobile structure that makes a fixed melody of sounds when moving. I designed a rolling piece with three wooden bell-like sturctures that are made in different sizes. Because of the different sizes each "bell" makes different notes, so when the piece is rolled it makes repetitive arpeggios.
This is a charcoal drawing of repetition of pine cones to evoke the mood of dance. This piece is inspired by Degas's ballerina series.
This is a 38" x 50" perspective study and self-portrait using an angled-mirror.
This is a 50" x 76" charcoal drawing of a self-made abstract cardboard structure. The objective is to use dramatic light source and to create a composition to make the overall space to look colossal.
